What we can help with

Most people arrive with one specific problem rather than a service in mind. If yours isn’t listed, it is still worth asking. Most of our work is for research groups at UiO, but we take projects from public agencies and private companies as well.

Your funder wants a data management plan.

Data management and sharing

  • A grant application with a data management section you don’t know how to fill in.
  • You have promised to share the data and have no idea how.
  • Years of collection, in a structure nobody outside the project could navigate.

A plan you can submit, and a data structure that makes good on it when the time comes to share.

Cheapest to do at application stage. Still possible later, just more work.

You can’t work with your data yet.

Data capture and engineering

  • A questionnaire study where the data has to stay inside UiO systems.
  • A Nettskjema already running, with no plan for getting the data out of it.
  • Sixty spreadsheets with inconsistent column names.
  • Scanner or instrument output that has to be organised before anything can run.

A collection setup that puts data where it is allowed to be, and one documented dataset you can actually use — with the script that produces it, so it reruns when more data arrives.

Easiest before you start collecting, but we have rescued plenty of studies mid-flight.

Your analysis won’t run the same way twice.

Processing, analysis and computing

  • The results changed and nobody knows which version produced the figures.
  • The analysis only runs on one person’s laptop.
  • Thousands of images or scans to process, and a loop that would take weeks.
  • A job keeps failing on TSD or Saga and the error message means nothing to you.

An analysis that runs the same way on your machine, a colleague’s and a server — packaged, version-controlled and documented — and running on a big machine when your laptop is not one.

You keep the code, and we can help you get the computing resources as well as use them.

Nobody can see where the project actually stands.

Applications and databases

  • Which participants have complete data? Nobody can answer without a week of checking.
  • Several people are editing the same tracking spreadsheet.
  • Years of collection with no single place that shows what exists.

A database or a small web application that answers those questions on demand, for everyone on the project at once.

Built around how your project already works, not a product you have to adapt to.

Your group needs to learn this, not outsource it.

Workshops and training

  • A new student needs to be productive in R and nobody has time to teach them.
  • Everyone’s analysis script works differently, and only on their own machine.
  • You want the group writing reproducible reports instead of pasting plots into Word.

A hands-on workshop built around your group’s own data and tools, and the materials to keep working from afterwards.

Online or in person. We prepare around what your group actually works on.

What we run and support

Some of what we do has a name of its own. If you arrived looking for one of these in particular, this is it.

  • GOAT

A research database that keeps its own history

Every value is versioned and timestamped, so you can see what changed, when, and who changed it. Built through UiO’s HUB-node initiative, and installed inside TSD when the data is sensitive. We set it up, shape it around your project, and train the people who will use it.

  • Nettskjema

Surveys, from the form to the dataset

Nettskjema is UiO’s survey tool, and we work at both ends of it. We help build the questionnaire — question types, branching, validation — and the process around it: who gets the link, where responses land, who may see them. If you want the responses in R afterwards, we can set up our nettskjemar package for you — or show your group how to use it themselves.

  • MRI

    From protocol to published figure

Protocol development, study design and feasibility up front. Once the scans exist — from whichever site collected them — we organise them, quality-control them and get them onto TSD, then run the preprocessing, structural and functional analysis, statistics, and the figures and methods text the paper needs.

  • Behavioural experiments

Tasks that run in any browser

Cognitive paradigms, questionnaires and response-time tasks written in JavaScript, so the same experiment runs in the lab, on a participant’s own machine or on a tablet. Our tachisto builder assembles one without you writing any, and exports a self-contained experiment you can upload to Cognition.run, Pavlovia or JATOS, or host on a server of your own. A UiO platform to run them on is in development with the IT department.

What working with us is like

You do not need to know which of these services you need, or what any of it is called. Describe the problem and we will tell you which one it is — and whether it is something we can actually help with.

We use what you already have

At UiO that means Nettskjema, Educloud, TSD, NREC and Saga, which you are already paying for. Elsewhere it means your own systems. Either way we work inside them rather than selling you something new.

You own everything we build

Code, documentation and workflows are handed over to you. Nothing we write needs us around to keep working.

We can do it, or teach it

Some groups want the work done for them. Others want someone to sit with their student for a week. Both are normal.

You can start very small

An hour to work out whether a thing is even possible is a perfectly sensible first job. Most collaborations start that way.

What people say afterwards

From researchers who have worked with us.

Capro created a custom database solution for us with our data spanning 15 years of longitudinal data collection. I am finally able to work with merged and tidy data for my papers, and to explore the entire catalogue of data without assistance!

I attended and co-organized Mo’s workshops on data processing, analysis, and reports. Mo is an excellent instructor who can adapt to different teaching contexts and audiences. Her enthusiasm for the topics makes the learning experience better.

The unique and comprehensive Lifebrain database has, thanks to Mo’s data management skills, has become a real treasure-trove: she has setup a user-friendly, secure, easy to explore data structure (data from over 5000 participants). She has additionally organized the Global Brain Health Survey data (over 27 000 respondents) and has made all the data and statistical analyses available for further use.

The University of Barcelona and partners had successful access to the Lifebrain Consortium data thanks to the Capro team’s effective coordination. Capro organized data in an easy-to-navigate system and provided guidance and updates to ensure high standards. The data included demographics, cognition, lifestyles, and MRI.

The Capro team has been amazing in creating and maintaining a stable and scalable data management and processing environment. It has allowed me to successfully process thousands of brain MRI data sets.

The advanced data processing pipelines the LCBC team developed and helped developing, with at times daily online face to face sparring and guidance sessions, have been pivotal to my research.

Mo from Capro provided essential support in conducting a mega-analysis with raw data from about half a million people. She set up and maintained the computing environment on a HPC so that we could run the analysis smoothly and without the data ever leaving the secure storage location.

I’ve witnessed Mo’s masterful revamping of the R-Ladies website. She’s put a lot of care in creating a professional and beautiful interface, but also in creating sustainable update workflows for humans and machines. Her web development skills increase faster than Hugo version numbers, she’s very resilient to any 502 thrown at her, and she’s a kind and thoughtful collaborator. 200/10 would recommend working with her!

I attended Mo’s workshop on visualization with ggplot2 at R-Ladies Edinburgh in 2021. Mo is a very competent and enthusiastic teacher who can communicate complex content in an accessible manner. I learned a lot from the workshop and appreciate all the time and effort that went into it.

Ask anyway. Describe it in ordinary words — we will work out what it is called. If it is not something we can help with, we will say so.
